thanks for the positive feedback from everyone who's interested. mhs sounds ok w/it, but i or a representative from the club have to fill out some forms- most likely i need to ask cliff about that. so. i think it's best to wait til thurs july 17 for the first workout. we should probably have it all sorted out by then. i will also ask whether we will overlap with any of mhs' evening games to see if that might be a recurring problem.

i'll probably post the suggested weekly training plans here, and send an email to the usual suspects as was done previously. any conscientious objectors to receiving the emails can let me know.

re, wtc workouts- i do think they're very well organized. and there's no substitute for a real coach. incidentally met a few sound shore people for the first time at some of them.
the only drawbacks to me were the cost (one thing i've always loved about running is that you only need a pair of shoes), and that if you race at an 8 mm pace, you will be the slowest person there. that excludes quite a few recreational athletes. this was my experience at some other clubs i have tried training with over the last few years, and something i liked about sound shore was that even people who are new to running can join. that said, i totally understand the need to feel challenged, and hope that the faster people from our club will continue to do that for each other. but i also think it's great to participate in the other county organizations, too- whatever helps us achieve our individual goals. personally, i like to participate in some of the wcc rides- would never have found some of the nicest routes thru the county otherwise. ok, beginning to ramble

made it to the start for this today. little bit of a challenge in and of itself. not a great night's sleep as other parents of very active small ones would appreciate. woke up just a few hours earlier than planned.

the course is lovely. i really like the area in general- wish it was a little closer. then again, perhaps that's why it's so beautiful. this race is very well managed. i had a great time. very nice turnout, and all sorts of abilities. one westchester tri club standout. and several who raced with jogging strollers (sorry, i just notice that these days- might have brought mine if it weren't so far away).

well. don't know that i'm 'back in the saddle again' just yet. but i had a good race overall. i'm still not at even splits, tho, so not back to previous fitness levels. this will be a goal for the rest of the summer. first mile 8:12, second, 8:28. last one i'm not talking about. that's what annoys me- slightly. can't maintain the pace. anyway, overall time was 27:20 (unofficial). at least it's a lot better than a month ago. so there's hope. and i've reached my goal training weight, so i also hope that will help.

Hi Carla:

First of all I think its wonderful that you're even considering to attempt this, & I wish you the best of luck. As for myself, I've been back doing speed workouts with the Westchester Track Club. I had enjoyed these workouts because there have always been runners there who were at my level or better. While I really dug Joe's varied workouts, one issue I had was that more often than not I was the only one who showed up on Tuesdays. Doing reps of 200s & 400s by myself was one thing, but I found it really difficult to get motivated to do tough interval workouts, or long tempo runs (2x20 min) on the track. For example, if I were to do 4x1200 intervals by myself with say 4 minutes rest in between, I would do them in the 4:35-4:40 range. At the WTC workouts, I'm doing them in under 4:30. Thats the difference.

However, I'm certainly willing to give it a shot. I can't make next weeks WTC workout due to a band gig on Wednesday, but I can make it to yours on Thursday. I like the idea of an earlier start time since I live & work locally, & I get out of work at 4PM. As for MHS approval, that might not be a problem, but we might have a problem with baseball games during the summer. Quite often during the spring & summer I've done track workouts in another location (Rye Neck HS), because I've found it impossible to run at Mamaroneck due to the crowds there.

So there you have it. Let me know how things go on your end.

Mark

ok, well, if i get a few more responses, i'll give it a shot and see what the turnout looks like. since this thurs is a holiday and a lot of folks are probably busy, i'd aim for next week to start- pending approval from mhs, of course.

also, i was worrying my first post on this may have come across as a little gender-separtist (?). to be clear, the way we were doing the workouts in the past- which everyone who participated seemed cool with- was solely based on pace, fitness level, and whatever the individual athlete's goals were. so i may propose a more challenging workout using joe's training plans as a foundation, and an abridged version to tailor to less competitive folks who still want to improve their speed, or those on a shorter time schedule (like myself) each week. so it's up to the individual to decide whatever they feel like doing or whichever pace group they want to run with. the spirit of this club, and these workouts, has always been easygoing, and i think it's good to keep it like that.

and, obviously, i'm not joe and don't have his talent or racing experience. all suggestions for weekly workouts or modifications of any plans i propose are quite welcome. i'm only hoping that we can keep a core group together for the motivation and encouragement. (plus...it's just fun!)

Carla, thanks for heading this up. I could be up for this, though probably not this week.

As for my training, I'm at a point where the tempo run is probably the only speedwork I should be doing, but it would be fun to have the company on the track.

Just a reminder that the open water swims up at Tod's Point (Greenwich CT) are in full swing. All SSRMC members are invited to join up with the Westchester Tri Club for their weekly group ocean training swim in the Sound. They meet every Friday for a 600a start. (Plan on arriving there around 545a so you have time to get into your wetsuit!)

If you need any info, just reply to this post and I'll answer any questions / provide any info

(i'm proposing thurs b/c that's the day i can go). i was thinking an earlier start than what we did before on tues- how about 6 or 6:30 pm?
i don't mind being the coordinator for these- maybe i would need to talk to mhs about it for the club to make sure it's ok for a group training session. i also don't mind, presumptuous of me as it may sound, to come up with some weekly workout plans. i did run and coach women's track way (way) back when in hs/college, so have a little background. for the guys, i'd most likely use joe's previous posts as a guide with all other suggestions welcome. really, i just think it would be great for us to not lose momentum with these workouts- plus, i know not everyone's an early bird, and we used to have some decent attendance. (i looked forward to them!).

let me know either here or via email!

did the 30 mile (wimp, yes) route this past saturday.
the actual ride out to montauk was wonderful. couldn't have had better weather. i think we averaged 13-15 mph along most of it, but it's sssooo flat, that's not too hard. of course, you never get the benefit of downhills, so you are pedaling all the time. i got a decent workout, but did this ride for the scenery and outing more than training. it felt good to know i could have gone faster and still had a lot left over at the end. this was our first time out to the hamptons, also- it is very pretty. i thought kind of a cross between the cape and prince edward island. with huge estates (lol).

as far as the organization of the ride. well, there were a ton of people. i wasn't terribly impressed in the beginning b/c they started us late, and the bikes got stuck in traffic, so we didn't get to begin the ride til 11 am! (got up at 6, which for me, on a weekend, esp these days...). in retrospect, might have been better to sign up for the 66 mile route, and bag it after 45-50 or however much we could manage, and just get picked up by a SAG van. even tho it's great to finish in montauk.

after the ride, tho (and the microbrews!), we felt kinder toward the organizers. there were just sssoo many people signed up. apparently, from a post-ride email from the leaders, there were over 2 thousand, so logistics are a real nightmare. i think they did a decent job, considering. but now that we've done the ride (and have the cue sheet- feel like a bandit), we'd probably just do it on our own if we go again. it was nice to be a part of the event, and the refreshments along the way are superb, but i'm not sure it's worth the cost. even tho i can see their justification for it. (might have been less kind if the weather had been worse, tho i realize that's not their fault).

there were all kinds of cyclists, from serious pack riders, to parents w/small children. it wasn't so crowded as to ever be a problem while riding. i noticed the organizers are doing another tour on the north fork in late august, at several distances tho it's advertised as a century. that one actually appeals to me personally more than montauk- seems like it would be a little less hectic (you can get yourself to the start on your own). plus, the north fork is less pretentious and more rural. the nature lovers' hamptons? anyway. the tour leader is also responsible for the ms ride over the tap this year- i did that two years' ago, and would very much recommend it. it's the only time you can travel over the bridge on two wheels, unless on the motorized type. and you can do bear mtn bridge, too!

Hey Mark, you seem to be getting a fair share of hardware these days. Congratulations!

It's so funny you mention the affair with the car key. I had the exact same problem once. After a lot of searching, the key was right there, under the kintama as they say in Japanese. Blame it on old age.

Hi folks:

This past Sunday I ran the Fairfield 5K with Gregg Rubin. For several years I have competed in this race, & its one of my favorites. Its marquee event is the half marathon, but I've always liked the 5K race because it is pancake flat. It also has a great race expo on the beach, with good post race refreshments, rock bands & running gear for sale. One of my goals was to place in the top three in my age group, a holy grail of mine since 2004. This year I'm 45, & they have five year age groups, so I had hoped that this would be my year.

Of course, I had a nice low paying far away band gig the night before, a bar gig at that, all the way up in Simsbury, CT. I didn't get home & into bed until 4AM. At 6AM, my alarm went off. Two hours of sleep for this race. Better than nothing.

So I got up, got into my running gear, & gulped down some coffee, orange juice, & some Red Bull. Drove to Gregg's house & picked him up. Made it in plenty of time for the race in Fairfield Beach. I was glad I had preregistered online, & that we were early, because the coffee, OJ, & Red Bull had made its way through my system, & the lines for the bathrooms & portajohns were already quite long, as well as those for preregistration.

Anyway I got my chip & took care of the other business. As I waited for the half marathon to start, I had a brief scare. I had lost my car key. I thought I had put it in the pouch I have inside my running shorts, but I discovered that it wasn't there. I looked around & couldn't find it on the ground. So I ran to my car to see if I had left it in the lock for the trunk of my car (I had done that once before). No such luck. "Oh sh--, what am I going to do now?" I looked around to see if anyone was nearby, & discreetly gave myself a patdown. To my immense relief, I felt the key. It had fallen out of the pouch, but it had been lodged somewhere within my shorts.

OK, now I can focus on the race for once. As I jogged back the half marathon had just started. I waited for the hordes to pass by, then started doing some stretching, then ran a couple of strides. I positioned myself behind John Samsel, an excellent 64 year old runner from WTC. I have had some success using him as a pacer, I got a PR in a 5 miler last summer running with him. Anyway, the horn goes off & I'm pretty relaxed following him in the first mile down Fairfield Beach Road. We take a right on Reef Road then go through mile one in 6:04. John started to pick up the pace after that. I tried to stay with him, but eight minutes into the race I decided that this strategy was unsustainable, so I let him go. We made a right at Old Post Road, where a hard rock band was playing. At about 1.5 miles there was a water stop, where I grabbed some water, sipped it, then dumped the rest over my head. Mile two-6:32 (12:36 overall).

Right on South Benson Road, right on Judson Street, left on Beach road. I'm feeling somewhat ragged but I'm holding it together & I'm actually picking up the pace a little. A teenager picks me off, I pick off another. About seventeen minutes into the race a guy passes me & he definitely looks over 45. Damn it! I chase after him & briefly pull even with him as we turn left at the beach parking lot, but as we near the finish line he turns on the afterburners & I finish a second behind him. My time-19:29, my best 5K time since October 2006. I'm happy about that, but if I've finished fourth in my age group because of that guy, I'm going to kill myself. I wait for Gregg to finish, then we do a cooldown jog to my car to get our dry clothes & Gator Aid. We head back to the finish line to watch the half marathoners start to come in. After watching the finish for 10-15 minutes, the announcer said that the results of the 5K were in. Despair swept me as we approached the wall to the building where the results were posted.

Well, as it turned out, that guy who passed my had just turned 50. I had finished 31st overall, & of the 30 runners who bad beaten me none were men between 45 & 49. So I got 1st in my age group!! The second place guy was two minutes behind me, how ironic is that? So Gregg & I hung out on the beach & I waited for the awards ceremony, where I picked up the trophy I've been waiting for since 2004.

God, it sure is great getting older!

This past Sunday was the 1st Tri / Du of the NYTri series up at Harriman State Park. Yes, it was smack in the middle of our heat wave - great timing. But, Matt Lewis (doing the duathlon) and myself (doing the triathlon) braved the heat and headed up to Lake Sebago. This was the standard sprint distance triathlon (1/2 mile swim, 16 mile bike, 5K run). And anyone who knows this race realizes that the bike and run are always a little short - but with the heat the way it was, that was just fine with me.

When we arrived shortly after 700a the weather was good, and the heat wasn't too bad. We checked in, got our bib numbers, got body marked, and set up our bikes. Then the sun crested above the tree line - wow did it warm up quickly.

Based on the water temp (68 at race time) I decided to not wear my wetsuit. I was in wave 4, so I had some standing around to do - so I found a bit of shade and sat down for the 15-20 minutes until my wave was sent off. The water temp was great, and I was very happy with my decision to just wear my one piece tri suit - I came out of the water in just over 12 minutes and made the run up to the transition area. I was a little disappointed that the timing mats were up at the transition area, and not down by the beach - the swim times include the approximate 100 yard run up to the T area. Oh well. Was in and out of T-1 pretty quickly and got on the bike. The bike leg was as expected.....a bit tough. The heat made the hills just that much tougher. But, at least on the big 2+ mile climb it was fully shaded. If not for that the bike leg would have been totally brutal. I felt good, and kept my cadence and heart rate in a range that I felt was reasonable. And again, anyone who knows this course knows about the bike leg. lots of climbing - lots of leg burning.

I hit T-2 feeling pretty good, but once on the road for the run I felt like I was going a bit slow. I was pretty smart about hydration and gel on the bike, but doused myself with water at the water station at the start of the run course. My heart rate went up really quick, but I tried to hold the pace I was churning out. I passed some people, but was still sure I was going slower than I wanted - but when I hit the turnaround point I was just over the 10 minute mark. Interesting, as the run course had no shade at all! I made the turn, grabbed more water, and tried to pick it up a bit. Passed a few more people and made the turn for the finish. I was pretty shot at the end - but felt pretty good overall. Final times / splits are below (again, the swim leg includes the run up to the T area - a bit annoying!):

Swim 13:10.2

T1 01:24

Bike 49:20.2 - 19.5 Avg

T2 01:04.9

Run 19:34.7

Total Time (chip time) 1:34:34.34

Finishing place was 17th overall - and 1st place in the 35-39 age group. Very nice to bring home hardware in the first Tri of the season.

Considering the Stamford KIC it Triathlon at the end of the month - Olympic distance. I hear most of the run course is shaded!

Hi Folks:

Just letting you know that Cathy & I are in Bermuda this week. I've discovered a great running trail nearby my hotel called the Railway Trail, that extends for about 21 miles throughout Bermuda, kind of like their version of the Colonial Greenway trail. It goes through some farmland & nature preserves, & its quite a beautiful run. Just this morning I almost ran over a group of chickens ambling on the trail. I'm just doing easy runs this week, I'm only in week three of my 24 week preparation for the NYC Marathon. Monday will be my first long run (16 miles).

We fly back on Sunday. I'll see you all when I get back.
really, this shld be a cycling post. i'm referring to the park just north of the gw, i think officially in alpine, nj. took my son out there this past weekend for a run- still loves the jogging stroller- to check it out b/c i'd heard a lot about it when i lived in nyc. it's definitely popular w/cyclists as i witnessed, and have heard it's 'lance's route' when he's in town. it was quite nice, tho odd to be on the cliffs looking down at the river and over to presumably, the bronx. it's sort of a reverse trippy thing like admiring the manhattan skyline from hoboken. anyway. i imagined that it would come into its own in fall or even winter with more sweeping views of the river. it reminded me on a (tic) grander scale of a route i did briefly last fall a few times out at indian well state park in ct along the housatonic. but palisades is a challenge for runner/cyclist alike imo, and the scenery is quite worth it. for cycling, tho, you'd definitely have to either bike up from the city or do a few loops down and up the road to get in your distance. i didn't figure out how long the park road is, but doubt it's more than 10 miles. but it's hilly. there are also quite a few tough-looking trails from what i could tell, and lengthy- up to 12 miles.

Lisa and friends:

I can volunteer my home for an outdoor barbecue on Sat June 7. Everyone could pitch in for set up, grilling, serving and clean up.

Call me and then we can send the invitation out today.

I go into full swing with Verdi's "Aida" with New Rochelle Opera so June 7 is best.

If anyone wants to come to the fully orchestrated and staged production check out www.nropera.org Tickets sell out for the last two performances - 6/21 and 22 for sure..!

If anyone is interested in joining a carpool to ride out early to Greenport and catch the ferry please contact me. There is room for 1 more in the car.
